Support Materials: CRISS for Homeschool Parents

What is Project CRISS for Homeschool Parents? Project CRISS for Homeschool Parents is a booklet for parents and their children that introduces them to the Project CRISS principles and some of the learning strategies. The booklet starts with an introduction to the Project CRISS Principles of Learning. If learning is to happen effectively, children must apply these principles to all learning situations—these principles are critical to learning and remembering information for learners of all ages. In addition, the booklet contains overviews and examples of a variety of learning strategies. These will help children incorporate the learning principles as they read, write, view, and experience curricular information.

How does Project CRISS for Homeschool Parents work? In the booklet, parents will find practical suggestions and examples of ways to help their children learn and remember information. The principles and strategies presented represent the process for learning, not the content. Parents should work with their children to encourage them to always use the principles of learning. For example, whenever a child reads, he should think (write or discuss) about what he already knows (Background Knowledge), and he should have a purpose for learning (Purpose Setting). The strategies used by children should be those that work best for the child in any given learning situation. Children need to try out different strategies and then afterwards determine which ones work most effectively. A strategy such as two-column Main Idea—Detail Notes might work well to record information from a social studies reading selection, while Picture Notes are better for retelling what was learned during a field trip.

What is the goal of Project CRISS for Homeschool Parents? It is our hope that parents and their children using the Project CRISS for Homeschool Parents materials will find a variety of ways to organize, write, and discuss content information, and that children using the CRISS principles and strategies will become independent learners, able to effectively tackle all learning situations.

What does the booklet cost? The cost for the Project CRISS for Homeschool Parents booklet is $25.00 plus shipping and handling (10% of total order, minimum of $7.95). To order, click here.
